In trying to explain that roses won't fix the relationship, Ashley sings about "a rose is a rose is a rose is a rose" a quote by Shakespeare - the notion that in the end, what matters is what something is, not what it's called.
And what this is, is toxic, no matter how many roses are sent to mend something that is already broken.
