“Fashionably Late” is a song of reassurance. I believe it’s easy to fall victim to comparison, especially in relationships. As you watch those around you start their lives together, whether it’s getting married or having kids, whatever it may be, it can be defeating feeling like you’re behind. I wrote this song as a response to that discouragement, essentially saying to my significant other, “Our story is our own, we’re the authors of this narrative. Rest assured, what we have and share will never be in question, we just have a different timeline from everyone else.” Truthfully, I wrote this before I proposed, it was my effort to ease any doubt or question of my partner in our future together. In this day and age, with social media being the way it is, only displaying the best moments, it’s easy to compare where you are in life next to someone else. “Fashionably Late” ignores the constraints of time and expectations that we place on ourselves and serves as a reminder to enjoy the ride and find comfort in the truth that we’ll get there eventually. It’s not up to anyone else but ourselves.
