역사상 무반주 첼로 솔로를 위해 쓰인 최고의 작품 중 하나라는 평가를 받는 요한 제바스티안 바흐(J. S. Bach)의 ‘첼로 솔로를 위한 여섯 개의 모음곡(무반주 첼로 모음곡, Six Suites For Cello Solo)’을 덴마크 국립 심포니 오케스트라(Danish National Symphony Orchestra)의 솔로 첼리스트인 헨릭 담 톰슨(Henrik Dam Thomsen)이 연주한 앨범.
요한 제바스티안 바흐가 왜 첼로 독주를 위한 여섯 개의 모음곡을 작곡했는지는 아무도 모른다. 또한 이 모음곡들이 13살의 스페인 음악 신동이 바르셀로나의 헌책방에서 낡은 악보 사본을 발견하기까지 한 세기가 넘게 지나도록 사라졌던 이유도 알 수 없다. 오늘날 바흐의 이 첼로 모음곡은 모든 첼리스트 지망생들의 통과의례가 되었다.
헨릭 담 톰슨에게 바흐 첼로 모음곡은 모든 정상급 첼리스트에게 그렇듯 그의 삶에서 없어서는 안 될 중요한 부분이다. 코로나19로 인해 공연이 중단된 동안 헨릭 담 톰슨은 바흐 모음곡에 더욱 깊이 몰입할 수 있는 기회를 가졌다. 모음곡을 연주할 때는 현재 제공되는 바로크 음악에 대한 모든 지식과 관련하여 많은 선택을 해야 하는데 톰슨은 자신의 악기에 충실하는 것이 중요하다고 생각하여 현대식 현을 사용하여 일반 활로 연주하고 일반적인 442Hz로 조율한 1680년에 제작된 프란체스코 루지에리(Francesco Ruggieri) 첼로로 연주했다. 이러한 선택은 모음곡 전체에 최고의 균질성을 보장했다.
