김해원 음악감독은 감성적이고 몰입감 있는 음악으로 독특한 예술 세계를 구축해 온 음악감독이자 싱어송라이터다. 포크 듀오 ‘김사월X김해원’으로 시작해 한국대중음악상 ‘올해의 신인’과 ‘최우수 포크 음반’을 수상하며 주목받았고, <윤희에게>, <콘크리트 유토피아> 등의 영화에서 예술성과 대중성을 두루 보여주었다. 이번 <조명가게>는 그의 첫 드라마 도전작으로, 대중적인 형식 속에서도 그만의 감각적인 색깔을 잃지 않는 음악을 선보인다.
<조명가게>에서 그는 미스터리와 감동을 오가는 이야기에 맞춰, 극의 정서와 어우러지는 섬세한 사운드로 청자를 깊이 있는 여정으로 이끈다.
<조명가게>의 음악팀에는 전작 <콘크리트 유토피아>에서 큰 역할을 했던 첼리스트이자 작곡가 지박이 다시 함께했다. 또한, 전작에서 음악 믹싱 엔지니어로 활약한 황현우가 이번 작품에서는 믹싱뿐만 아니라 작곡에도 참여하여 그 역할을 확장했다. 이들과 신예 이현준까지 가세한 음악팀은 중요한 곡들을 함께 만들어 내며 드라마의 정서가 더욱 풍부해지게 하였다.

<조명가게>의 음악을 통해 초현실적이고 감성적인 음향으로 미지의 세계로 초대받은 청자가 극 중 캐릭터들의 시점으로 감각하길 바란다. 미스터리와 감동을 조화롭게 엮어 내어 드라마의 관객과 음악의 청자들에게 멋지고 독특한 경험을 선사하고자 했다.
강풀 작가의 원작에서부터 존재하던 쓸쓸하고 혼자인 정서, 소외된 존재들, 불쾌한 표정들과 구슬픔, 공감하고자 하는 시선, 따뜻한 호의와 상대방에게 손 내밀어 주는 마음—그러한 것들이 시나리오와 배우들의 연기, 김희원 감독의 연출 등을 통해 드라마에 구현되고 있다고 느꼈다. 음악 작업이 마치 어둠 속에서 빛을 찾는 행위라고 봤을 때, 그것들은 어두운 골목길 어딘가에 빛나고 있는 조명가게들이었다.
개인적으로 감독의 연출 방향을 엿볼 수 있던 대사가 있는데, “다 사람 사는 세상 아니겠습니까”였다. 억지로 극적이거나, 속된 말로 호들갑 떨지 않으려는 태도, 자연스러운 상태 자체에 대해 김희원 감독님과 오랜 시간 대화하며 음악에 반영하고자 했다.
