아무도 아무나 되는 노래

 

[Era]의 시간은 20분으로 흐른다. 네 곡의 수록곡을 모두 이어 붙인 영상은 시대의 한 구간을 관통하는 모양새다.

 

한 여성이 있다. 신체를 뒤덮은 막이 질기게 피부에 들러붙는다. 우리에게도 한 겹 있다. 원하지 않지만 없어서는 안 되는. 여분의 외피는 가끔 속이기 좋지만 대체로 거추장스럽다. 누구도 완벽한 자신의 상태를 주장하기 어렵다. 평정을 찾으려고 분주하다. “돌아오지 않는 강”에서 들려오는 마릴린 먼로의 음성은 사람에게는 양가적인 면이 있다고 외친다. 껍데기를 차츰차츰 떼어내지만 전부 벗어버리지는 못한 인물은 “아가미”의 습한 사운드와 함께 기괴한 형태로 대체된다. 기괴함은 뭘까? 명확하게 드러내지 않는 것, 구분 지을 수 없는 것, 정의 내릴 수 없는 것. amu는 인간을 닮았지만 무엇을 지칭하지 않는 것을 분신처럼 안는다. 어루만지고 보듬고 다시 밀어낸다. 그리고 비늘 같은 껍질을 떼어내 무늬처럼 덧입는다. “어두운 물은 검게”에 이르러는 좁고 익숙한 공간에 갇혀 증기처럼 감싸는 불안과 공포와 싸운다. 옥죄던 외피는 어느새 어두운 물을 방어한다. 손을 잡고 화해를 나눈다. 내가 나를 사랑하고 혼내고 거둔다. “섬”에 당도해 상처입고 허물어진 폐허를 발 밑에 두고 숨을 돌린다. 더 이상 트랙은 없지만 이 노래는 끝나지 않는다. 아마 영원히 반복될 수도 있다.

 

[Era]는 시대를 살아가는 한 사람의 이야기를 뚝 떼어 놓았다. 나아가 누구의 이야기가 되기도 한다. 고통과 불안을 수반하는 살아내는 시간을 친절하게 설명하지 않는다. 고난을 극복하고 행복으로 종결되는 이야기가 얼마나 허황된 지 우리는 아주 잘 알고 있다. 다만, 지지 않는다는 것, 살아가고 살아낼 것이라는 굳건한 움직임을 보여준다. amu의 [Era]는 지금 어떤 구간에 서 있는지 어떤 모습인지 자신을 확인하게 하는 힘을 가졌다.

Tracks for anyone and everyone.

 

[Era] spans twenty minutes. The video imagines four tracks as water, which punctuates through parts of an era to exist in multiple times and spaces.

 

There is a woman. A suffocating film covers her skin. It's a membrane that covers everyone. It’s something no one wants but everyone needs. Some possess a thicker skin while some possess multiple layers. While this may aid in their deception, they are bondaged by its additional weight. No one is able to discern their true self among their many layers and everyone is occupied in their attempts to find peace. Marilyn Monroe's voice on ‘River of No Return’ reminds us that ambivalence exists in all people. ‘Agami’ describes a person who molts in perpetuum, stuck in a loop of perpetual shedding, leaving her in a state of amorphousness. amu hugs the amorphous being, which exists in obscurity, before pushing it away. She tries to assist the being by helping her molt but as each layer is removed, a scar like pattern is left behind. ‘Black Water’ is the embodiment of the terrifying emotions and trauma associated with drowning. The shell which the being tried to shed so desperately now protects her from the tenebrous water. amu and the woman hold hands in an act of reconciliation. I love, despise, and embrace myself. Finally, at ‘Seom’, the being finds peace above her wounded and crumbled past. There are no more tracks left in the background but the final song does not end, it too loops in perpetuum.

 

[Era] is a fragmented story of a person living through an era. It is a story about anyone and everyone. The pain, suffering and anxiety that pervade over all of our lives are explained in palpable detail. We are all familiar with the absurdity of a happy ending and [Era] details the resilience and gumption required to survive through life. amu's [Era] is a timepiece which helps listeners identify and embrace which part of the cycle they find themselves in.
