구약성서 예언자 요나의 이야기에서 유래된다. 니느웨라는 도시로 가서 신의 분노를 예언하라는 부름을 받지만, 요나는 거역한다. 도시 반대 방향의 배를 타지만 폭풍을 맞고 바다에 휩쓸려 고래에게 삼킨다. 사흘간 갇혀있던 요나는 신의 명을 받들기로 한 순간부터 비로소 풀려난다.
